His Radeon RX 7900 XTX MBA reaches 110°C, AMD replies that this is normal

AMD then changed its mind and invited the complainant to return its graphics card for investigation. It seems that a few copies of Radeon RX 7900 XTX are indeed suffering from overheating.

On Reddit, owners of Radeon RX 7900 XTX MBA (Made by AMD) observed temperatures reaching 110°C. One of them, u/nero1338, reported this phenomenon eight days ago. Its graphics card reaches this temperature in the game Call of Duty Modern Warfare II (2022). At this threshold, the fans run at their full capacity but fail to cool the GPU, which lowers the frequencies so as not to wait for a critical threshold. He contacted AMD support. First, the RMA service (return merchandise authorization) replied that this temperature was normal. The company then changed its mind and offered to send his graphics card back for examination.

The department’s first response to his request was: “Thank you for your email. Temperatures are normal. If you have any other problem, please let us know. Thank you for contacting AMD”. A few hours ago, however, u/nero1338 reported that an AMD employee had just contacted him to invite him to send his graphics card to Canada (the user is located in Germany), which he will do.

AMD corrects some of the consumption problems of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX / XT

An issue affecting a few Radeon RX 7900 XTX MBA lots

This case is apparently not isolated; several customers report the same problem. According to the analysis carried out by Der8auer in a video published yesterday, this overheating would be linked to several factors: assembly pressure and quality of application of the paste and the thermal pads.

Not all MBA cards suffer from this problem and custom models are spared. If your copy reaches such temperatures, do not hesitate to contact AMD. For our part, our test copy (test carried out in partnership with Igor Wallossek) rarely exceeded 85°C. However, sometimes rising temperatures would cause GPU clocks to drop momentarily, until the fans lowered the temperature a few degrees.
