Opportunities for coalitions are likely to increase

Bulgaria’s political landscape is on the brink of change as nine political parties gear up for a pivotal meeting in the National Assembly. Among these, “Velichie” is widely expected to secure its place in parliament, according to analyses surrounding the 51st Parliament of Bulgaria.
If Velichie joins the assembly, the distribution of mandates will see a notable adjustment. The party is projected to become the smallest parliamentary group, with an estimated 10 representatives. This growth follows a pending decision by the Constitutional Court, anticipated by the end of the month.
The Velichie party had filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court, contesting the election results. Initial data indicated their inclusion in parliament, but the final count showed a vote share of 3.999%, just shy of the 4% threshold. This narrow miss led the party, under the leadership of Ivelin Mihailov, to challenge the outcome.
In response, the Supreme Court ordered a recount of ballots in 1,777 sections adn a review of 442 additional protocols.
Simultaneously,President Rumen Radev is expected to hand the first mandate to form a government to GERB-SDS representatives.
Current parliamentary composition:
GERB-SDS with 69 representatives
PP-DB – 37
“Revival” – 35
DPS-NEW BEGINING – 30
BSP-OL – 20
DPS-DPS – 19
ETC – 18
MATCH – 12
Potential reshaped parliamentary landscape:
GERB-SDS – 66 deputies,
PP-DB – 35,
“Revival” – 34,
DPS-NEW BEGINNING – 29,
BSP-OL – 19,
DPS-DPS – 19,
ETC – 17,
SWORD – 11,

what are the main challenges to the formation and sustainability of coalitions in Bulgaria’s diverse political landscape?
Interview with Dr.Sofia Marinova, Political Analyst and Expert on Coalition Building
By Archyde News Editor
Archyde News Editor: Good morning, Dr. Marinova. Thank you for joining us today. As Bulgaria’s political landscape undergoes meaningful shifts, with nine political parties preparing for a pivotal meeting in the National Assembly, we’re eager to hear your insights. Let’s start with the expected rise of the party “Velichie.” What do you think this development signifies for the broader political dynamics in the region?
Dr.Sofia Marinova: Good morning, and thank you for the chance. The emergence of “Velichie” as a likely parliamentary presence is a reflection of the evolving priorities of Bulgarian citizens. It indicates a growing appetite for parties that champion resilience, unity, and decisive action—values that resonate deeply in today’s geopolitical climate. This shift is not just a local phenomenon; it aligns with broader European trends were nations are increasingly seeking coalitions that safeguard shared values and interests.
Archyde News Editor: You’ve mentioned the importance of coalitions in Europe’s current political climate. Could you elaborate on why coalition-building is becoming more crucial, especially in the face of global challenges?
Dr. Sofia Marinova: Absolutely. In a rapidly changing world, where geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties are mounting,no single party or nation can effectively address these challenges alone. Coalitions provide a platform for pooling resources, expertise, and strategies. They foster a collective approach to solving complex issues, whether it’s security, climate change, or economic stability. In Bulgaria’s case, the meeting of nine parties signals a recognition of this necessity. The parties must transcend individual agendas to focus on national and, ultimately, European resilience.
Archyde News Editor: That’s a compelling viewpoint. How do you see these potential coalitions influencing Bulgaria’s role within the European Union, especially given the call for a “coalition of the resolute” across Europe?
Dr.Sofia marinova: Bulgaria’s participation in such coalitions would elevate its standing within the EU. Historically, Bulgaria has navigated its EU membership carefully, balancing national interests with broader European goals. By forming robust coalitions domestically, Bulgaria can position itself as a proactive contributor to Europe’s collective resilience. This would not only strengthen its voice in EU policymaking but also enhance its ability to advocate for issues critical to its citizens, such as energy security and regional stability.
Archyde News Editor: what challenges do you foresee in the formation and sustainability of these coalitions, particularly in a diverse political landscape like Bulgaria’s?
Dr. Sofia marinova: The primary challenge lies in reconciling differing ideologies and priorities. while the parties may agree on the need for unity, the specifics of policy implementation can be contentious. Effective coalition-building requires clear communication, mutual respect, and a shared vision for the future. Additionally, sustaining these coalitions demands continuous engagement with citizens, ensuring that their voices and needs remain central to decision-making.
Archyde News Editor: Thank you, Dr. Marinova, for your insightful analysis. It’s clear that coalition-building is not just a political strategy but a necessary response to the pressing challenges of our times.
dr. Sofia Marinova: Indeed. It’s a pathway toward a more resilient and unified Europe, and Bulgaria has a pivotal role to play in this journey. Thank you for the discussion.
