John Elkann’s hearing in Parliament on the Stellantis crisis is “necessary” and the request, sensationally rejected by the group’s president, is now “renewed”. Alberto Gusmeroli, president of the Production Activities Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, sent a letter to Elkann, with the renewal of the request for a hearing before the joint Commissions of the Chamber and Senate, regarding the situation of the Group’s production plants in Italy. The president of the group’s “no” to reporting to Parliament had provoked reactions of harsh condemnation.
“I regret to learn your refusal to participate in the hearing at the to the automotive production of the Stellantis group in Italy – we read in the letter – The automotive industry is a strategic asset for our country, with over 220,000 direct and indirect employees. The history of the last hundred years reminds us of how industrial and social development Italian is the fruit of the work of entrepreneurs and workers, in a context of strong ties with the territory and significant support from the institutions”.
Gusmeroli traces recent history: “Fiat has been the engine and driving force of Italian growth over the years and today Stellantis, which receives its precious legacy, is called to respond to new challenging needs for mobility and innovation, in a virtuous path of economic sustainability , social and environmental. The achievement of these objectives cannot ignore a continuous and synergistic dialogue between business and public institutions, aimed at the well-being of the entire community”.
Then the new request: “Therefore, the invitation to intervene in the hearing by the parliamentary commissions does not represent a mere request for technical information, but derives from the legitimate desire of all political forces to know the strategic vision of the reference partner of Stellantis , which I believe cannot ignore the industrial history of our country and the company: an approach that in the past has been a winning element of economic and social development”.
Elkann’s presence in the chamber is necessary given the gravity of the situation: “Parliament is certainly the main place to continue the positive and constructive dialogue between citizens, institutions and industrial actors who have made the history of our country. In this “From this perspective, even more so considering the delicate historical period we are experiencing, I consider your presence even more necessary, also in light of the availability for a ‘frank and respectful dialogue’ represented by you”, writes Gusmeroli. “I therefore renew the request for a joint hearing before the Parliamentary Commissions of the Chamber and Senate, with the aim of continuing in a proactive and concrete way the discussion already started with the hearing of the CEO, Carlos Tavares, bringing to the attention of the Parliament plan of the Stellantis group, especially regarding production continuity and the maintenance of jobs in our country”, concludes the letter.

**Interview with Alberto Gusmeroli on the Stellantis Crisis and the Call for John Elkann’s Hearing**
**Editor:** Today, we have the honor of speaking with Alberto Gusmeroli, the President of the Production Activities Commission at the Chamber of Deputies. Mr. Gusmeroli, thank you for joining us.
**Gusmeroli:** Thank you for having me.
**Editor:** Let’s dive right into it. You recently renewed the request for John Elkann to address Parliament concerning the Stellantis crisis. Why is this hearing so crucial at this moment?
**Gusmeroli:** The hearing is vital because the automotive industry is a cornerstone of our economy, employing over 220,000 people directly and indirectly. Stellantis, inheriting a rich legacy from Fiat, is positioned at the forefront of our industry’s evolution. It’s essential for us to have a dialogue about the direction the company is taking, especially in light of the challenges it faces in mobility and innovation.
**Editor:** Mr. Elkann previously rejected the request. What was your reaction to his refusal, and how did it influence your decision to renew the request?
**Gusmeroli:** His refusal was met with widespread condemnation, as it seemed dismissive of the concerns surrounding the workforce and production strategies. Given the significance of Stellantis to Italy’s industrial landscape, it’s imperative that we foster a constructive conversation. By renewing the request, we aim to underline the necessity of collaboration between business and public institutions for the greater good.
**Editor:** You mentioned the need for a ”synergistic dialogue” between Stellantis and public institutions. What specific issues do you hope to address in the hearing?
**Gusmeroli:** We aim to discuss the future sustainability of Stellantis, addressing not only economic factors but also social and environmental responsibilities. Our goal is to ensure that the company’s strategies align with the well-being of employees and the local communities affected by Stellantis operations.
**Editor:** Some critics argue that Elkann’s dismissal of the hearing signals a broader issue with corporate accountability. What’s your take on this perspective?
**Gusmeroli:** I understand the concerns. Corporate accountability is essential in maintaining the trust of the workforce and the public. The hearing is our opportunity to hold leadership accountable and reinforce the idea that corporate decisions should not only reflect profit motives but also consider their societal impact.
**Editor:** In closing, what message would you like to convey to the public and Stellantis regarding this situation?
**Gusmeroli:** I urge both the public and Stellantis to recognize the importance of dialogue in navigating these challenging times. We need to come together to find solutions that benefit not just the company but all stakeholders involved. The automotive industry is a shared asset, and its future depends on our collective efforts.
**Editor:** Thank you, Mr. Gusmeroli, for sharing your insights with us today.
**Gusmeroli:** Thank you for having me.
