On the occasion of Hiroshima Day on 6 August 2024, SPÖ Spokesperson for Foreign Policy and Global Development Petra Bayr called for increased commitment to global peace and nuclear disarmament. “The atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima 79 years ago is a reminder of the devastating consequences of nuclear weapons. We have a responsibility to remember this tragedy and work towards a world without nuclear weapons.
“Precisely because cooperation agreements between countries are being canceled today, peace and security cannot be taken for granted: we need international cooperation, we must strengthen existing disarmament agreements and launch new ones,” Bayer demanded. “Unfortunately, the dangers are very real. Due to the threat of nuclear weapons and global warming, the Doomsday Clock is set at ninety seconds to twelve. We must take decisive action to avert these dangers. The international community must unite against nuclear weapons, Fight for a world free of nuclear weapons.
“Hiroshima Day reminds us that we must never forget the horrors of war and nuclear destruction. We have a responsibility to the citizens, children, and elders in our communities to ensure a peaceful, secure future. (End) Ah/Part 1
