A few hours following International Women’s Day, Stavroula Noka gave her child the greatest gift. He brought him back to life.

“The gift I gave my son was to give him one of my kidneys so he might have a better and quality life,” she told ERT.

After the successful transplant, Stavroula Noka is preparing to be discharged, feeling vindicated for her decision to donate the kidney to her son.

“I wasn’t afraid because I did it from the heart. I wasn’t scared at all,” he adds.

The 35-year-old recipient, who years ago underwent a kidney transplant once more, remains under medical observation.

“Thank you mom for the gift you gave me. You gave me life once more. I can’t wait to get up and come home and hug you,” the recipient emphasizes.

For a week now, two operating room nurses and an anesthesiologist have been moving every Tuesday for 13 weeks to the “Hippocratic Hospital” from AHEPA in order to cover the great staff shortages and speed up kidney transplants.

From the two kidney transplants that are done every month in Hippocrates, a total of six will be done in the next three months, with dozens of patients being saved and their lives changed.

Despite the serious shortages faced by the hospital in the specialty of anesthesiologists, 12 transplants from living donors were performed in 2022 and 18 in 2023.
