The guardians of the temple, there are always some, will undoubtedly shudder a little when they learn that the Opéra de Nice is preparing to host an entirely hip-hop event in its cozy setting. But, like the director of the institution since October 2019, Bertrand Rossi, part of the usual audience of classical concerts will be able to show openness.
“I would very much like the opera to once once more become an agora for conferences, debates, exhibitions, concerts… A universe for total art, an encounter between music, dance, literature, scenery or digital building bridges between people and styles”, hoped for Bertrand Rossi in our columns, in January. Saturday, September 2, Hip Hop’Era Battle will undoubtedly make it possible to take a step in this direction.
Battle between classical and hip-hop
On August 11, we celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the birth of hip-hop. This day corresponds to the moment when the movement was born, in New York, at the instigation of Kool Herc, who had started looping soul and funk songs on his turntables.
Half a century later, this movement, which might have been only a fad, as many predicted, has become a universal phenomenon. And if rap monopolizes the most attention, its other components (dance, graffiti and DJing) remain essential.
From 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., on the forecourt of the Opera, the public will be able to see it. Ten street artists will take part in a graffiti contest, creating works live. At the same time, eight ballet dancers and as many hip-hop dance specialists will meet as a duo (following drawing lots), with one mission: to imagine choreographies that they will present a few hours later, during a battle imagined by Toulonnaise Julia Funky-J, winner of the World Cup organized by Juste Debout in 2017.
With Dee Nasty, Euteïka and Fanny Polly…
Starting at 8 p.m., dancers will share the stage with rappers and DJs. Most old school will have immediately noticed the presence of Dee Nasty, an emblematic figure who occupied a prominent place in the emergence of hip-hop in France. A great gentleman who will be in charge of closing the evening with his mix. Before him, we can hear the Azurean Fanny Polly, who had quickly caught the eye of the Scred Connection. But also Euteïka, masked rapper combining substance and form. But also the Toulonnais Nine, producer with an international pedigree turned rapper.
