Hip Hop Turns 50: Explore the Birthplace of Hip Hop in New York City

He Hip Hop turns 50 and New York City Tourism + Conventions, the tourism promotion office of New York, United States, invites visitors and New Yorkers alike to celebrate the anniversary of Hip Hop in its official birthplace.

The musical genre, which has become a global movement, has its roots in a festival of Bronxhosted by DJ Kool Herc on August 11, 1973, en 1520 Sedgwick Avenue.

To celebrate the holiday, NYC Tourism partnered with Mass Appeal – the entertainment company behind “Hip Hop 50” – to support key events in the city and launched a hub dedicated to hip hop content at NYCtourism.com.

The center features a interactive map of hip hop experiences in the five boroughs, as well as interviews, Q&As with local hip-hop fans, guides to hip-hop culture, history, shops, restaurants, murals (Street Art), tours, and neighborhoods. In addition, a list of commemorative events and cultural exhibitions.

“New York City is the official birthplace and center of hip hop culture, from the music to its global influence on art, fashion, dance, language and more,” said Fred Dixon, president and CEO of New York City Tourism + Conventions.

He added: “Hip hop has had a lasting impact on the culture of the city that can be experienced throughout all five boroughs, and we are excited to bring NYCtourism.com to life through our content hub, which is our letter of love hip hop in New York”.

What to see and do in New York

“Hip Hop’s 50th Anniversary gave us an opportunity to reflect on the ways hip hop has influenced our culture and create fresh content to enhance the visitor experience in New York City,” said Rondel Holder, Vice President of Multicultural Content at New York City Tourism + Conventions.

Next, a selection of the celebrations that stand out in the calendar of festivities.

1. 50 Years of Hip Hop at the New York Public Library and Book of HOV: The New York Public Library hosts free hip hop-themed events and surprises like art classes, movie nights, and beat-making at libraries across the city.

Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Public Library premiered Book of HOV, a retrospective of the life and work of Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter to date.

2. Sky’s the Limit in the Kings District: until October 31 in Dumbo. Near the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge stands the Sherwin Banfield sculpture dedicated to Brooklyn-born “hip hop titan” Christopher Wallace aka The Notorious BIG

The 9-foot-tall monument celebrates the life, art and legacy of the late rapper. It was opened in 2022 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Biggie’s death. The structure features a bust of Wallace wearing a crown.

3. Seaport Arts: Photoville’s Hip Hop 50. Through October 31 at The Seaport, Manhattan, the Photoville public photography festival will display Janette Beckman’s Hip Hop at 50 in the windows at the corner of Fulton and Front Streets.

Known for her work with the New York hip hop scene in the 1980s, Beckman is an influential documentarian on urban culture who has photographed rap pioneers such as Run-DMC, Slick Rick, Salt-N-Pepa, Grandmaster Flash and LL CoolJ.

4. Hip Hop Til Infinity in the Hall of Lights. Through September 17 in Lower Manhattan. Tickets are on sale for this digital installation that will transport visitors through an illumination of hip hop history, including different eras and regions.

Co-produced by global entertainment company Mass Appeal and hybrid creative studio SUPERBIEN, the exhibition will bring 50 years of hip hop to life.

5. 5×5 Block Party Series: On August 12 in Brooklyn, Queens and Bronx. Free parties in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, featuring big-name DJs and influential artists along with street art installations, food vendors, interactive experiences, and talks.

6. Lincoln Center Hip Hop Week. From August 9 to 12 on the Upper West Side, Manhattan. Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City will honor hip hop’s golden anniversary with live performances, outdoor dance parties and nightclubs featuring top DJs past and present, a trap choir experience and participatory family events.

7. Mass Appeal & Live Nation’s Hip Hop 50 Live Concert. At Yankee Stadium on August 11 there will be a historic Bronx event featuring hip hop legends and pioneers like Run-DMC, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Eve, Lil’ Kim, Remy Ma, Trina, TI, Fat Joe, Common, A$AP Ferg, The SugarHill Gang and more.

8. BRIC hip hop 50th anniversary weekend. On August 11 and 12 in Brooklyn. BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! will feature a weekend of performances by Digable Planets and Kari Faux, plus Film Night: Brown Sugar.

9. Dance inn Times Square Ailey Extension Hip Hop 50th Anniversary Celebration. On August 10 in Times Square, Manhattan, it’s a special 50th anniversary celebration that welcomes everyone to join leading hip hop instructors for an experience presented by Ailey Extension and Times Square Alliance as part of Dance in Times Square, a series of free weekly outdoor dance workshops.

10. Hot 97 & WBLS Present Hip Hop Forever en MSG. On September 15 in Midtown Manhattan, this concert will feature an exciting lineup that includes the Wu-Tang Clan (born in Staten Island), Mary J. Blige and more.

11. New York City Wine & Food Festival The Cookout: Hip Hop’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. On October 15 in Manhattan, this closing event will feature a lineup of African-American chefs in New York showcasing their signature cuisine, including James Beard Award-winning chef Johnson who attempts the record for the most joloff – a West African rice dish- cooked at once.

In addition, there will be performances by DJ Cassidy and Rev Run with MC Angela Yee.
