Lahore: A Hindu youth has been arrested in Pakistan’s Punjab province on charges of blasphemy by making derogatory remarks regarding Islamic holy places. News agency PTI also reported that the angry crowd tried to attack the youth. The incident took place in Rahim Yar Khan district, 400 km from Lahore. A young man named Akbar Ram was taken into custody by the police on charges of blasphemy. The action was taken following a complaint filed by his neighbor Faisal Munir.
On August 11, Akbar Ram was arrested by the police on charges of blasphemy and immediately transferred to jail on judicial remand fearing a law and order problem in the village, the police said. The police also stated that if he had been kept at the police station, people would have attacked him. Akbar Ram has been booked under the Blasphemy Act (295-A of the Pakistan Penal Code) and the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance. The officials added that the timely arrival of the police saved Akbar Ram’s life.
When the police reached the village following learning that the Hindu had committed blasphemy, people were gathered near his house. The crowd demanded that Akbar Ram be handed over to them. But the young man was arrested and brought to the police station. The complainant alleged that Akbar Ram made objectionable remarks regarding Islam in front of many people. Reports also surfaced that his family had fled the village fearing an attack. Pakistan is a country where blasphemy is punishable by death.
