It was the night of Friday that the police reported that two people – a man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s – were trapped on top of Store Skagastølstind.
They were in contact with the emergency services throughout the night and the following day, and due to demanding weather conditions, they were only brought down at 3.30pm on Friday afternoon.
– The two have come down, been examined by a doctor and do not need further follow-up. They are wet, cold and tired and have had a tough night and a tough day, says police task leader Roar Bøe to Parish newspaper and NRK on site.
The two had been climbing since Thursday morning, but did not get down. They themselves contacted the police by phone late on Thursday evening. The police have said that they were not dressed to spend the night in the mountains. At 8 o’clock the crew had to call off a rescue attempt due to bad weather conditions. They were then just over 200 meters away from the summit.
The police commend the rescuers who were involved in the operation.
– It is one of the most demanding mountain terrains you can be in, so all credit to those who have brought these two down. Now they have been dismissed by us and must put on dry, warm clothes and rest, says Bøe.
Store Skagastølstind, with its 2,405 meters, is Norway’s third highest mountain – and the highest that involves climbing to get to the top. The mountain is located in the west of Jotunheimen.
