The man was found dead in a steep gully by the mountain rescue team during a search operation in the Bayernsteig area that evening. He is believed to have fallen. His wife had previously called the police after the mountaineer had not returned by 1 p.m. as promised and could not be reached.
The man was rescued by the crew of a police helicopter. The victim was a German, the police told ORF Tirol. Further investigations were underway.
