The first day of the Fukuoka Long Course World Championships was marked by two individual world records, signed by Ariarne Titmus and Léon Marchand.

The first great moment of these games, the final of the women’s 400m freestyle kept its promises. Ariarne Titmus picked up the gold by signing a new world record (3’55”38). The Australian improved by 0.70 the mark of the Canadian Summer McInthosh, only 4th in this final, to overtake the American Katie Ledecky.

Léon Marchand breaks Michael Phelps’ record

The prodigy Léon Marchand also achieved a new best world mark, in the final of the 400m medley. The 21-year-old Frenchman victoriously defended his title in the discipline by clocking 4’02”50, 1”34 better than the former reference time set by legend Michael Phelps at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

A 3rd world record was even beaten, the work of the Australian women’s 4x100m free relay (3’27”06). This quartet, led by the 2022 world champion in the 100m free Mollie O’Callaghan (52”08 on the 1st stint), did not even include Ariarne Titmus.
