The 96th ceremony of presenting one of the most prestigious film awards in the world, Oscar 2024, took place in Los Angeles. Last evening, the Film Academy awarded awards to the winners in 23 categories, and the winners of previous years were entrusted with announcing their names. There were some bright, touching and funny moments.

Fall on the red carpet

The evening traditionally began with the red carpet, where the main contenders for victory and invited celebrities posed. American TV presenter and blogger Liza Koshy managed to stand out from their background, losing her balance due to high heels and falling in front of reporters.

The ceremony started late

For the first time in a long time, the show started five minutes late because some of the audience simply did not have time to get into the Dolby Theater, being stuck at the entrance due to a Palestinian protest. The host of the show, Jimmy Kimmel, had to get by, making up jokes on the fly. For example, the showman did not miss the opportunity to mention the scandal with the absence of “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig from the profile category. He told the Academy members from the stage: “I know you’re clapping, but by the way, you’re the ones who didn’t vote for her. Don’t act like you had nothing to do with this.”

Forbidden gratitude to PR people became the meme of the evening

Actress Davane Joy Randolph, who won her first Oscar for her supporting role in The Leftovers, broke the rules of the ceremony in her acceptance speech by mentioning her PR agent, thereby giving birth to a new meme. Jokes regarding special “gratitude to PR people” continued to be heard before each award ceremony; Robert Downey Jr. managed to stop them. While receiving the award for Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer, he thanked his stylist, publicist, manager and lawyer from the stage.

“My 40-year-old lawyer Tom Hanson, half of which he spent insuring me and getting me out of prison, thank you, brother,” Downey said at the end of his speech.

Naked John Cena

Actor John Cena, who presented the award for costume design, took the stage in his mother’s clothes. It all started with a memory of a naked man running out from backstage at the Oscars 50 years ago. Host Jimmy Kimmel repeated the line twice before John Cena dared to peek out from behind the set, saying he didn’t want to act like a stalker and run around naked. As a result, embarrassed, he went on stage, hiding behind an envelope with the name of the winner.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito reunite

The ceremony was also memorable for the reunion of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito. The artists who starred in the cult films “Twins” and “Junior” took the stage to announce the winners in the category for best visual effects and film editing. Noticing actor Michael Keaton in the audience, DeVito said:

– Arnold and I appeared together for very obvious reasons.

“We both tried to kill Batman,” Schwarzenegger clarified, alluding to their characters from the films “Batman Returns” and “Batman and Robin.”

“Here he is, the son of the birch,” DeVito said, pointing to Michael Keaton, who played Batman.

-You have the nerve to show your face here! – Schwarzenegger joked.

Ryan Gosling got the whole crowd singing “I’m Just Ken”

An equally highlight of the evening was Ryan Gosling’s performance of the song “I’m Just Ken”, which he recorded for the film “Barbie”. The actor appeared on stage in a pink suit embroidered with rhinestones and gloves and made the entire audience dance and sing along. His colleagues in the film “Barbie” helped him complete the performance: director Greta Grevig, actresses Margot Robbie and America Ferrera.

Jimmy Kimmel responded to Trump’s criticism

The host of the ceremony, Jimmy Kimmel, addressed Donald Trump from the stage at the climax of the evening following the former US president insulted him on social networks. The showman took his phone out of his pocket, reading a post from “a certain person” on the Truth Social website:

“Has there ever been a worse host than Jimmy Kimmel at the Oscars? His performance was like that of a man who is trying too hard to be something he is not and can never be. Get rid of Kimmel and maybe replace him with yet another seedy but cheap ABC “talent” George Slopanopoulos. He will make everyone on stage look bigger, stronger and more glamorous.”

“Blah blah blah, let’s make America great once more,” Kimmel continued. – Now let’s see if you can guess which former president just posted this on Truth Social. Anyone? No? Well, thank you, President Trump. Thanks for watching, I’m surprised you’re still… haven’t you done jail time yet?

Kimmel himself said in an interview on the eve of the Oscars that he likes to joke regarding Trump because he knows that, as an ex-president, he reacts painfully to criticism.

“And then every now and then he reminds us that he hates it and gets angry.” So I like it. “I enjoy it,” the TV presenter said.
