Highlights from the Second Day of the Inter-High Cycling Competition at Hakodate Velodrome

The track event started on the second day of the inter-high cycling competition. In the women’s 500m time trial, Maria Kitaoka (Uchinada High School) won the championship and achieved consecutive victories following last year. In the men’s team sprint preliminaries, Matsuyama Gakuin set a new men’s junior record and came out on top.

From the second day of the 2020 All-Japan High School Athletic Tournament (commonly known as the Inter-High), the cycling event will be moved to the Hakodate Velodrome and the track event will be held. Each event is held in an outdoor bank of 400m per lap.

The first day included the women’s 500m time trial final, men’s 4km team pursuit qualifying, men’s team sprint qualifying, keirin, 4km speed race, and sprint qualifying.

12 people ran the women’s 500m time trial, which was the only final event on the first day. Maria Kitaoka (Uchinada High School), who started last, marked 37.113 seconds, surpassing Ryoka Aimi (Kurayoshi Nishi High School), who ran just before, by regarding 0.7 seconds to win the race. She decided to win the inter-high school in a row in this event.

In the team sprint preliminaries in which 15 schools participated, Matsuyama Gakuin, who ran in the final group, set a new junior Japanese record of 1 minute 15 seconds 568 and became the top (the previous junior Japanese record was Kyushu Gakuin in 2020. 1 minute 15 seconds 575). In the team pursuit preliminaries in which 11 schools entered, Chiharadai High School topped with a time of 4:30.618. Shizuoka Kita High School, who marked the 4:31 mark, came in 2nd place and will face off in tomorrow’s final. Kitakuwata High School, who had won two consecutive titles until last year, finished in 7th place.

In the men’s sprint qualifying 200m flying time trial, Futoshi Miyazaki (Showa Gakuin) topped the time with 10.524 seconds. The top eight marked 10 seconds, and the qualifying line was 11.311 seconds. The sprint is held until the 1/8 final and the loser’s repechage, and the top 8 qualifying advances to the 1/4 final.

Tomorrow, the team sprint and 4km team pursuit finals and finals, the Keirin and sprint 1/2 finals, the women’s 2km individual pursuit, the men’s 3km individual pursuit, the point race, and the scratch qualifying will be held.
