From this Monday (1⁰), the Federal Government will increase the import tax on electric vehicles and solar panels. The idea is to encourage national production.
The announcement was made by the vice-president and minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, this Sunday (31).
According to Alckmin on the G1 portal, the measure aims to finance two government programs, one of which is “Mover”. This program provides for the granting of R$3.5 billion in financial credits for companies to invest in decarbonizationaligning with the program’s mandatory requirements until 2024.
A portion of this amount, worth R$2.9 billion, is already foreseen in the Annual Budget Law. The remaining R$600 million will be offset by the gradual increase in the import tax for electric vehicles until 2026.
The justification behind the tax increase is to encourage investment in the national production of electric vehicles. By increasing the tax on imported cars, the intention is to make national products more attractive, resulting in a lower final cost for the consumer. Progressive adjustment seeks to align economic interests with the country’s environmental goals.

The reduction in the import tariff on assembled panels was revoked by Camex, resulting in a 10.8% tax from January 2024, with the revoked concessions coming into force in February.
