[메디컬투데이=조민규 기자] It was found that people with severe psoriasis have a high risk of cardiovascular disease.

A study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that more than 30% of psoriasis patients without cardiovascular disease had a high risk of coronary artery dysfunction.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease in which red rashes with clearly defined borders and varying sizes repeatedly occur on the skin. The cause of psoriasis is not clearly known, but it is known to be caused by genetic and immunological factors and mainly occurs when immunity is low.

The causes of cardiovascular disease are known to be diverse, and new correlations have recently been revealed, including inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis. Some previous studies have shown increased cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality in patients with severe psoriasis. Researchers in a previous study noted that psoriasis patients have a high prevalence of long-term cardiovascular dysfunction even if they do not have clinically evident cardiovascular disease.

Researchers analyzed 503 people with psoriasis but not diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. The researchers observed coronary arteries using echocardiography and examined how dilated small blood vessels can be.

As a result of the study, previously undiagnosed coronary artery dysfunction was observed in more than 30% of participants. The researchers concluded that people with severe psoriasis have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
