High Voter Turnout and Party Preferences: Insights from the National Election Opinion Survey

A public opinion poll was released on the 28th showing that 74.6% of voters responded that they will definitely vote in next year’s general election. The voter turnout for the 2016 general election was 58.0%, and the voter turnout for the 2020 general election was 66.2%. As a result of a survey conducted by YTN, together with public opinion polling agency Embrain Public, on the 25th and 26th to 1,002 voters aged 18 or older across the country (confidence level 95%, sampling error ±3.1% points), 74.6% of respondents said they would vote in April next year. He announced that he would definitely vote in the 22nd National Assembly election. In particular, the willingness of older people to vote was higher than that of young people. Among those aged 18 to 29, only 58.2% said they would definitely vote, but 84.5% of those aged 60 or older expressed their active intention to vote. Respondents expressed higher support for the opposition Democratic Party of Korea than the ruling party in the next general election. While 29.8% responded that they would vote for the ruling People Power Party, 38.9% responded that they would vote for the Democratic Party of Korea. Among active voters, 43.8% of respondents said they would vote for the Democratic Party, and 34.8% said they would vote for the People Power Party, showing a higher tendency to support the Democratic Party. By region, in Seoul, 33.3% said they would vote for the People Power Party and 35% said they would vote for the Democratic Party, showing similar levels. On the other hand, in the Gyeonggi and Incheon regions, there was a large difference in approval ratings, with the People Power Party at 24.8% and the Democratic Party at 44.8%. The response that they would vote for the People Power Party was especially high in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions (47.2%), while the response that they would vote for the Democratic Party was particularly high in the Gwangju and Jeolla region (56.3%).
