A 22-year-old man was arrested overnight from Thursday to Friday following a chase with the police during which two officers were injured and four vehicles damaged. The Brussels public prosecutor’s office confirmed this information from La Capitale and Het Nieuwsblad. The suspect appeared on Saturday before an investigating judge, who decided to release him under conditions.
“On September 1 around 1 a.m., the theft of a vehicle was reported,” said prosecutor spokesman Willemien Baert. “Around 1:40 a.m., the Brussels West police zone (Jette/Ganshoren/Koekelberg/Molenbeek-Saint-Jean/Berchem-Saint-Agathe) announced that they had found the car. The driver immediately fled and a chase began.
“Two police vehicles entered the road to try to block the road to the vehicle, but the driver simply crossed the roadblock and damaged two vehicles in this way”, according to the prosecution. “During the chase, other police cars were damaged. The stolen car was finally immobilized on the Place Surlet de Chokier. Two people were in the passenger compartment: the passenger managed to flee on foot, but the driver was arrested on the spot by the police.
Two police officers were injured, the prosecution said. They were able to leave the hospital, but will be unable to work for three days.
