In Chamber I of the Orán Trial Court, before Judge Edgardo de Laurenci, the trial of the young Mauricio Fabián Zambrano began yesterday, who is accused of simple homicide since on April 24, 2022 he collided with Virginia Peronja causing injuries that ended causing his death.

The event happened on Sunday, April 24, 2022, on National Route 50, at the height of the aqueduct. Peronja, 28, was running when she was hit by the car Zambrano was driving. As it emerged from the investigation, the young man was driving zigzagging, at high speed and without taking into account the warning of other drivers who would have changed their lights and honked their horn.

On top of that, following colliding with the young woman, Zambrano, who is a former police officer and is 28 years old, would have tried to escape but was stopped by police officers who were driving along the same route. The breathalyzer analysis yielded a positive result and had 1.84 grams of alcohol per liter in the blood, according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which in the debate is represented by the prosecutor Claudia Carreras.

Zambrano asked to testify yesterday. He said that that day he had come from an event in Pichanal and acknowledged that they had indeed been drinking alcoholic beverages. In addition, he acknowledged that on Saturday morning, in order to take a nap, he had consumed marijuana. On Sunday morning, when he was returning from Pichanal, he entered Yrigoyen, very close to the city of Orán, to look for his friend.

About the moment of the crash, he said that he saw a woman with her back turned running along the asphalt strip, who maneuvered to avoid her and flounced several times because she crossed him. He added that when he hit the young woman, his car was crossed and then some police officers approached him, handcuffed him and took him into custody.

On the other hand, for the first day of the trial, eight people were summoned to testify, including relatives of the victim and the accused, and police personnel.

Virginia Peronja’s father said that his daughter used to go jogging on the highway early. That morning she received a phone call and was notified of the accident. He reported that he arrived at the hospital and her daughter passed away on the hour.

Four police officers who arrested Zambrano and assisted the victim also testified. They said that they were returning from doing security coverage at a folk festival held in Pichanal and they were coming behind the vehicle of the now accused. In that situation they saw that the car was advancing in a zigzag, so they tried to overtake it but were unsuccessful. They also affirmed that they honked at him several times and played lights on him, but Zambrano did not pay attention to his warnings.

In these circumstances, suddenly, on the way up to the aqueduct, they saw a woman running and trying to avoid Zambrano’s car that had gone down the shoulder and had gone back up onto the asphalt. She seemed to be chasing her, they said. Until at one point they saw Peronja fly through the air, fall and lie in a green space, while Zambrano’s car spun like a top and was pointing the other way.

The policemen stopped and saw that Zambrano was trying to start the car, they even saw that there was a can of beer and the two occupants were disoriented and had alcoholic breath. When they approached the young woman trying to assist her, they noticed that she had a weak pulse and multiple fractures and they called the 911 Emergency System. Other troops who came behind them in a mobile collaborated by cutting off traffic.

The officer who was driving the car in which the policemen were traveling pointed out the place of the accident and the maneuvers carried out by Zambrano.

Zambrano’s companion also declared yesterday. He said that he was waiting for a bus to go back to Oran when the young man offered to take him. They entered Yrigoyen for a little while and left. He assured that he had been dozing because they had drunk alcoholic beverages at the festival and that he woke up when Zambrano made a maneuver with the car, he saw a girl who was crossing the road, wanting to go to the other side. He pointed out that the impact was from the side where he was sitting as a passenger. Then the police came and arrested them. He also maintained that the victim was still alive at the time. They were taken to the hospital and at 3:00 p.m. they were informed that the young woman had died.

The hearing will resume on Friday at 9 a.m. with more witness statements. The accident in which Irene Virginia Peronja died aroused great indignation in the city of Oran.

In the trial Zambrano is being defended by the lawyer Orfeo Maggio and the lawyer Florencia Maggio.
