Dramatic Car Chase Leads to Arrests in Rimini
Just after 1 a.m. on May 26, a tense situation unfolded in Rimini, Italy, turning a quiet neighborhood into the setting for a high-speed police chase. It all began with a series of messages popping up in a local watch group chat.
Suspicious Activity Sparks Concern
Residents of via Covignano, delle Fonti, and Santa Cristina had been sharing their anxieties about potential burglars in the area. Their fears appeared justified when members reported the presence of three suspicious individuals traveling in a light blue car. These individuals seemed to be casing houses, stopping briefly to check if anyone was home. Concerned neighbors quickly alerted the police.
Police Respond, Pursuit Ensues
Responding officers promptly identified the suspect vehicle, a light blue Kia, near Bar Ilde. However, when they tried to approach, the car sped away at full throttle, disappearing onto Via delle Fonti with its tire squealing.
Undeterred, the police gave chase. Sirens blared, but the Kia continued to accelerate, reaching speeds over 100 kilometers per hour on a treacherous, dirt road.
Despite the officers’ best efforts, the driver of the Kia deftly maneuvered the vehicle, Managing to ram and damage a patrol car—a new Alfa Romeo Tonale recently added to the Rimini police fleet—in the process.
Flight Ends in Foiled Escape Attempt
However, the fleeing suspects’ luck ultimately ran out. Their escape route was abruptly stopped at the end of the dirt road by a fence. They abandoned their vehicle and made a desperate attempt to flee on foot, but several other police officers who had been called in as reinforcement were already waiting and managed to apprehend them.
A History of Criminal Activity
The two men and a woman were arrested and charged with resisting a public official. Further investigation revealed that the individuals had extensive criminal records, with previous convictions for theft, improper robbery, receiving stolen goods, evasion, assault, and contempt of a public official.
Inside the Kia, police found a collection of tools commonly used in break-ins, including an iron bar, screwdriver, scissors, and wire, solidifying their suspicions.
The 38-year-old Italian suspect, and the 32-year-old Macedonian resident of Rimini, represented by lawyer Sonia Giulianelli, received punishments reflecting their actions. The Italian was sentenced to two years and 11 months in prison, with his driver’s license revoked and his car confiscated.
