On August 20 and 21, high school students and their representatives reported irregularities in the selection system for the allocation of places at public universities by the National Admission System (SNI).

One of the complaints made through X (formerly Twitter) highlights that when entering the website of the Office of Planning for the University Sector (OPSU) they do not see information about the allocation of the quota or the status of the application.

In addition, dozens of high school students reported that the agency assigned applicants to cities in the interior of the country without having requested a place in those study centers.

User @Karellis_moment said that OPSU assigned her a place at a university in San Juan de los Morros, Guárico state, without her having previously requested it.

“As the mother of a young woman who recently graduated from high school, I can tell you that there is nothing more frustrating than the OPSU results and the obstacles to taking the SIMADI UCV exams. With the first, nobody understands how they assign the places and with the second, it is like a punishment,” said Nadeska Noriega Ávila on her social networks.

Among the most frequent complaints is the difficulty of high school students to access the OPSU website, because the portal does not recognize credentials. While another comment indicates that students with averages of 19 points out of 20 were unable to obtain places in public universities.

Check the OPSU results

The usual way to consult the results of the University Sector Planning Office is for graduates to take the following steps:

-Access the website https://sni.opsu.gob.ve

-Enter personal data

-Click on Results

OPSU notes that if students are on the waiting list, they may modify their study options for the second allocation phase.

The SNI has more than 360 thousand registered students

On August 20, the National Admission System announced the publication phase of the results of applicants for university courses in the first phase for the period 2024-2025.

According to information also published by the Ministry of Higher Education, there are at least 360,333 high school graduates, of which 275,870 (85.46%) have already been assigned to a university degree.

However, almost 15% of applicants must wait for the second phase of quota allocation.

How to apply for a place at a public university?

High school students seeking a place at a public university must register on the OPSU website.

After adding the required data, high school graduates must fill out the options for the careers and universities they wish to attend.

Once the steps are completed, the system will analyze the options taking into account the student’s grades, among other data, and will then assign or not a place in a public educational institution.

OPSU quotas assigned in 2023

Carlos Alvarado, permanent secretary of the National Council of Universities of Venezuela, reported in September of last year that approximately 334 thousand high school graduates were enrolled for the 2023-2024 period.

It was learned that the Ministry of Higher Education indicated in September 2023 that through the SNI, 67.71% of the allocations were directed to the careers prioritized by the Venezuelan government.

For her part, Sandra Oblitas, Minister of Higher Education, confirmed that the ministerial portfolio received more than 106 thousand applications from students for a place in public universities.

“We have a sufficiently broad offer to guarantee that opportunity to study for those young people who are currently choosing to change their option and enter university education. In the second phase we have 106,445 applications and 206,710 study opportunities,” Oblitas said in August 2023 in an interview for Unión Radio.

According to the minister, the courses that were in greatest demand in 2023 were Engineering, Architecture and Technology, followed by Health Sciences and Agronomy. Applications were also registered for the areas of Education Sciences and Sports Sciences, Social Sciences, Basic Sciences and Humanities, Letters and Arts.
