PARKERSBURG — The West Virginia Secondary Schools Athletic Commission released the first round football playoff pairings on Sunday, and four Northern Panhandle squads found themselves among the 48 teams that qualified in the three divisions and will begin their quests for state championships at Wheeling Island Stadium in early December.

Class AAA

Wheeling Park (7-2) finished No. 11 and will travel to the eastern panhandle on Friday night to meet No. 6 Jefferson (8-2) at 7:30. Neither team has lost a game since Sept. 22.

The Patriots are riding a 5-game winning streak and have averaged 38.8 points a game this season while giving up 14.9. However, they have not yielded more than 17 except to Steubenville (42-28). Their other loss came to University (17-14).

The Cougars are on a 6-game streak, having last lost at Martinsburg (57-14). Their other loss came in week 2 at Shenando, Va. (34-28) in triple OT. They are averaging 34.7 points an outing and giving up 18.7, but they have posted back-to-back shutouts to end the regular season.

Class AA

No. 5 Weir (9-1) secured a home playoff game at Jimmy Carey Stadium. The Red Riders will welcome a familiar foe — No. 12 Frankfort (7-3) — on Friday night at 7:30. The two teams met in week 4 in Weirton with Weir claiming a 35-21 victory.

Weir’s only loss came at the hands of Union Local (20-13) in week 5 in Morristown. It has bounced back with five impressive victories.

The Red Riders are averaging 35.2 points and yielding 13.2. The Falcons, meanwhile, are scoring at a 34.2 clip and giving up 17.5.

Class A

No. 8 Cameron (9-1) brings a 9-game winning streak into Saturday followingnoon’s clash with No. 9 Man (7-3) at Dragons Field. The Dragons dropped their season-opener to West Greene, Pa., (28-24) but have blitzed the final nine opponents.

Cameron averages an eye-popping 47.8 points a contest and only gives up 9.4

The Hillbillies average 25.7 points and yield 15.8. They were blanked by Chapmanville (32-0) in their final game and have lost two of the final four.

No. 10 Tyler Consolidated (8-2) will trek to Williamson Friday night to meet No. 7 Tug Valley (8-2) at 7:30.

The Silver Knights have dropped two of their final three outings and are averaging 36.7 points a game. Defensively, they give up 23.5.

Across the Ohio River, five schools will be involved in regional semifinal games on Friday at 7 p.m.

Division IV, Region 15

Top-ranked Steubenville (11-1) will meet No. 13 Indian Valley (9-3) at Red Devil Stadium in St. Clairsville. Big Red is riding a 11-game win streak.

Division V, Region 19

No. 3 Barnesville (12-0) earned a rematch with No. 7 Wheelersburg (8-3) at Hamilton Township High School’s Alumni Field. The two met in a second-round game last season with the Pirates pulling away in the fourth quarter.
