The budget allocated to the construction of Espace Riopelle now amounts to $84 million, unlike the $42.5 million that was initially announced.

Following the call for tenders launched on December 7 for the construction of Espace Riopelle, the National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec (MNBAQ) received bids from three firms. After carrying out an analysis, the contract will be awarded to CONCREA which was the lowest bidder.
Work should begin in the spring to allow the future pavilion to open in 2026. With the end of the architectural competition, the MNBAQ was able to make a complete evaluation of the project, which went from $42.5 million to $84 million. .
Last January, Le Journal reported that the costs were already close to $70 million, following the granting of additional public funds.

“When the project announcement was made in December 2021, the cost assessment was only 40% complete. It was during the integrated design process, the last stage of work with the architects of the fabg firm and the professionals assigned to the project, that the fine details of the costs were established,” explained Linda Tremblay, spokesperson for the MNBAQ.
“In light of the detailed assessments that were carried out, it was necessary to readjust the budget accordingly,” she added.
Financial arrangement
The Government of Quebec, through the Ministry of Culture and Communications, will inject $44M. And for its part, the City of Quebec will increase its financial support to $5 million. The Jean Paul Riopelle Foundation has committed to providing an amount of $20 million which might be increased to $25 million. The MNBAQ Foundation increases its contribution to $10 million.
A major fundraising campaign will also be launched next fall in order to go even further in meeting the financial objectives with donors.

“With a total investment of $44 million, the government of Quebec is making a contribution commensurate with its commitment to our culture. Espace Riopelle will transcend time and generations to enrich our cultural heritage, commensurate with the giant that Jean Paul Riopelle represents in our collective imagination,” declared Mathieu Lacombe, Minister of Culture and Communications.
“The future Espace Riopelle will constitute an exceptional showcase for our culture and an additional attraction for citizens, as well as for tourists passing through Quebec. We are privileged that the collections of this larger-than-life artist are entrusted to our state museum,” added Bruno Marchand, mayor of Quebec.
Site preparation
Work has already been carried out to prepare the site before construction. Nearly 9,000 works were moved for protection purposes or for future exhibition purposes. All the exhibition rooms, at the same location where the construction site will take place, have been dismantled.
