The Canadian Grand Prix started with the first free practice session, which was largely disrupted by a technical problem affecting the race direction. A failure on the surveillance cameras prevented a large part of EL1 from taking place normally.
Rain is expected sporadically over the three days, and it hit Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in the morning before practice. The riders would have liked to be able to ride in the dry more than that, especially since several teams were bringing new things.
This is the case of Aston Martin F1, whose AMR23 adopts new sidepods, a new floor, and a new engine cover. At Alpine, a set with new rear suspensions is installed for Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon.
Williams brings a large set of novelties for Alex Albon, which notably features new sidepods, a revised engine cover, an all-new floor, but also a different rear wing.
Other teams such as Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, AlphaTauri, Haas, or even McLaren have brought specific configuration elements to the Montreal circuit.
The session started and gave the drivers a fast first lap, with Valtteri Bottas setting the fastest time ahead of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso. But the session was quickly neutralized for a transmission shaft problem on the Alpine de Gasly.
The yellow flag and then the red flag were displayed. In reality, the procedure was prolonged due to problems with the security cameras, and the race director explained why the timer continued to scroll.
“The delay in EL1 will continue until the safety cameras are synchronized, and until the problem is resolved, on-track action cannot resume. The system is a local installation and circuit management continues working to resolve the issue.”
“The clock will continue to tick in FP1 and the session will not be extended as the rules require there to be 2.5 hours between FP1 and FP2. F1 and the FIA are exploring options to extend Free Practice 2.”
But in the wake of that statement, F1 confirmed that the session would not resume, and revealed that EL2 would start 30 minutes earlier than planned. The second free session will therefore begin at 10:30 p.m. in France, and will last 1:30.
