High-ranking Defense Minister assures no negotiations with ELN over kidnapping of Luis Díaz’s father

This Friday noon, the Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez, assured in response to the kidnapping of Luis Manuel Díaz, father of the Colombia National Team player Luis Díaz, at the hands of the ELN that “nothing is being negotiated (with the guerrilla), but Yes, they are waiting for them to fulfill what they had stated”, that is, that they were going to release him.

Along these lines, the minister assured that the Government rejects this “action of the National Liberation Army, we always reject acts of this nature.”

In fact, the head of the military portfolio recognized that the kidnapping of Luis Manuel Díaz “puts at risk a process in which the generation of trust between the parties is a fundamental element.”

And he reiterated that “we hope for the very prompt release of Mr. Díaz. All circumstances and possibilities have been created for this liberation, as announced by the National Liberation Army,” to come to fruition.

And he pointed out that, however, “we have been with this reprehensible kidnapping for six days and we still have not found that response from the ELN.”

‘It was a small group that kidnapped him’

“Always on the issue of all illegal armed organizations, unity of command has been a topic of analysis and discussion,” said the minister, who added that he is aware that Díaz was kidnapped by “a small group from this front that commits crimes in This region”.

And he warns that at the negotiation table the ELN spokespersons affirm “that this event (kidnapping) did not even have the knowledge of national commanders” and that they reject it because they are “aware that they might put the entire peace process at risk.” ”.

Public Force maintains search operations

Along these lines, Velásquez stated that the Public Force “has been carrying out search operations in the region. There is a possibility of placement (…) but what we need now is prompt voluntary release.”

In fact, the Military Forces indicated that the search and rescue operations for Luis Manuel Díaz continue in La Guajira and “have not stopped.”

This is how the Military Gaula, in coordination with the Police and with the support of the Colombian Aerospace Force, advances its investigative work in different sectors in the south of the department.

To the aerial surveillance work, the authorities have added the strengthening of military capabilities such as the arrival of monitoring and technical intelligence equipment, with which they hope to obtain signals, clues and traces that can serve as part of the investigative and search work. .

In the search area there are already more than 250 men from the Military Gaula and the Matamoros and Rondón mechanized groups of the Tenth Brigade of the National Army.
