When a woman he was stalking reported it, Jeon Ju-hwan, who brutally murdered a woman at a Seoul subway station, was sentenced to life imprisonment in an appeals trial.

The judge, who sentenced him to a higher sentence than the first trial, condemned him to be quarantined for life and to atone, but did not accept the death penalty requested by the prosecution.

Reporter Kim Sang-hoon covered the story.

Joo-hwan Jeon murdered a co-worker who was stalking him in the bathroom at Sindang Station on the Seoul subway.

After stalking the victim by contacting the victim more than 300 times over the past two years, when the victim’s report puts him in danger of criminal punishment, he retaliates.

Fearing that the hair would fall off, he prepared a hair cap, installed an app that interfered with location tracking, and used a disposable transportation card to hide his movements.

″I did something really crazy.″

The first trial sentenced him to 9 years in prison for stalking charges, 40 years in prison for retaliatory killing, and a total of 49 years in prison.

Jeon Ju-hwan appealed, saying the punishment was heavy, but the appeals court, which tried the two cases together, sentenced him to a heavier life imprisonment.

Initially, the first trial saw that ″Jeon Ju-hwan might realize her mistakes while serving a long prison term,″ but the 2nd trial court ″Seeing that he went on to kill revenge even following he issued a statement of reflection on the stalking crime, I had a fundamental question regarding whether he repented of his crimes and doubted the possibility of reformation. I saw it.

In particular, he said, “Retaliation crimes that neutralize the judicial system require strict punishment.”

The death penalty, which the prosecution has been demanding from the first trial to the second trial, was not accepted as an extremely exceptional punishment.

″I hope that this incident will not happen anymore, rather than causing panic and fear to other victims.″

During the appeal trial, more than 27,000 citizens submitted a petition demanding strict punishment for Jeon Ju-hwan.

The victim’s family sobbed throughout the sentence, and Jeon Ju-hwan said nothing.

The prosecution plans to review whether to appeal by reflecting the opinions of the bereaved family.
