Dubai: Muhammad Yassin
An Asian jewelry dealer seized 7 precious stones, valued at $164,000, from another merchant of his nationality. The Dubai Misdemeanor and Violations Court convicted him, sentenced him to 6 months in prison, fined him $159,000, or its equivalent in UAE dirhams, and deported him from the country following serving his sentence. .
According to the file of the case, which took place in March last year, a merchant submitted a report stating that the accused had received 7 precious stones from him to sell in his shop, before he denied receiving them. According to the whistleblower’s testimony, he handed over precious stones worth $164,000 to the accused, to sell them, and received $5,000 from him in the presence of another merchant, but the accused delayed paying or refunding their value.
The whistleblower stated in the investigations that the accused told him that he was waiting to receive the value from another person, and kept delaying the return of the money, so the whistleblower asked him to return the stones, but he refused and denied receiving them, so he informed the police of the incident.
A witness who has a friendly relationship with the whistleblower and the accused stated that he attended their agreement, and the accused received 7 stones valued at $164,000.
In the investigations, the accused denied receiving the stones, and stated that the whistleblower offered him the stones and their photos through the “WhatsApp” application, and he did not receive them, so the whistleblower presented evidence of conversations between them in which the accused admits that he received the precious stones, and that he received 5 thousand dollars. The court condemned him and ruled in its aforementioned ruling. The Court of Appeal upheld the ruling.
