High occupancy level of the SEN shelter remains

Asuncion, IP Agency.- A total of 45 people received assistance last night at the shelter of the National Emergency Secretariat, due to the intense cold. The high demand for the service caused the SEN to increase the number of beds, going from the 50 initially installed to 70 currently.

Miguel Rojas, one of those in charge of the operation, informed the media that until this morning a total of 1,183 services had been provided during the operation to assist people in situations of exposure to low temperatures.

In addition to the people sheltered in shelters, there are also homeless people who do not want to go to the shelter and are provided with mattresses, blankets and a ration of hot food.

In this context, he highlighted that on Monday morning they woke up with 45 people sheltered, of which 39 are male and 6 are female.

In recent days, the average number of people served at the shelter has remained above 50, mainly homeless men.

He explained that these people, once they spend the night in the shelter, clean themselves, have breakfast and then go to their workplaces. The refugees are generally street vendors or people who carry out activities on public roads, he indicated.

He added that in the SEN shelter located on the Costanera Norte of Asunción they have a place to clean themselves and they are also given clothes to change into, in order to then transport them to where they have to go to work.

The low temperatures that have forced the activation of this shelter operation for homeless people are expected to continue until midweek, according to forecasts from the Meteorological Department.
