The first week of the construction holiday was very heavy in terms of casualties. No less than 12 people have lost their lives on Quebec roads since last Friday, according to a compilation by Journal.
While more than a quarter of the Quebec population is at rest, the last few days have been particularly deadly compared to the last few years. The toll might increase to 15 deaths, according to statistics compiled by the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

“Last year, during the two weeks of construction, 15 people lost their lives on the roads or in off-road trails, explains the spokesperson for the SQ, Catherine Bernard. This year, we have already reached that number and there is still a full week left.
Disastrous balance sheet for small vehicles
Several accidents involving motorcyclists or ATV riders have taken place in the province in recent days. Six people made the last outing of their lives on their machine during the last week.
This is the case, among others, of Samuel Lacoursière, 38, and Audrey Michaud, 31, who died in a violent collision in Saint-Raymond, in Portneuf, last Tuesday.

A resident of the area who witnessed the scene, Karl Roy, said he was stunned by the violence of the impact between the motorcycle on which the two victims were and the sports utility vehicle (SUV) driven by a woman under the influence of alcohol.
After seeing the two bodies “flying through the air”, it was he who pronounced the death of the driver before rescuing the passenger. Unfortunately, it was too late for her too.
Several drownings
While the situation is far from looking good on the roads, things aren’t really any better for Quebec’s bodies of water.
Two people lost their lives in a body of water over the weekend. These deaths are in addition to that of a father who committed suicide by drowning following having probably killed his daughter and his wife, in Lachine, in Montreal, Thursday.
The body of Sumit Shyder, a 21-year-old Ukrainian, was also found on Friday in the Etchemin River, following several days of searching.
