High Levels of PFAS4 in Brussels Reservoir Exceeding International Standards

The “PFAS4 rate detected in the Rhode reservoir far exceeds the Danish standard (2 ng/l) and the indicative threshold set in Flanders (4 ng/l)“, notes the elected official. Between October 2021 and October of this year, the average concentration of PFAS4 reached 6.9 ng/l in this reservoir, which serves more than half of the taps in Brussels.

The reservoirs of Callois (Lillois) and Uccle, which water the other half of the capital’s inhabitants, also display concentrations higher than Danish standards but lower than recommendations. They remain much lower than those detected in the Rhode reservoir.

As a reminder, on Wednesday, Brussels Minister of the Environment Alain Maron (Ecolo) indicated that, for the 20 PFAS detected by Vivaqua since 2020, the concentrations never exceed the ceiling of 100 nanograms per liter of water (the European standard from 2026, but which will already be in force in Brussels from the beginning of 2024, editor’s note), nor the alert threshold of 30 nanograms per liter that the Brussels Region intends to establish.
