High-level meetings in Rabat on the strategic project of the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline: confirming progress and strengthening cooperation

High-level working meetings were held in Rabat from July 15 to 19 on the strategic project of the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline between Nigeria and Morocco, bringing together all the countries through which the pipeline will pass and representatives of the Economic Community of West African States.

A statement from the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines said that the delegations of the transit countries, namely Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, the Republic of Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Benin and Nigeria, were headed by the general managers of their national oil companies, while the Economic Community of West African States was represented by Sidiko Douka, Commissioner in charge of energy, while the West African Gas Pipeline Authority was represented by its general manager, Shafari Hanawa.

Representatives of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, the General Directorate of Taxes, the Customs and Indirect Taxes Administration, in addition to the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water, the Office Chérifien des Phosphates and the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy also participated in these meetings.

The statement indicated that these meetings mainly made it possible to confirm the completion of the detailed preliminary studies of the project, and to review the progress made in the environmental and social studies. The delegations also made progress in finalizing the future intergovernmental agreement and the hosting agreement for each country.

Following these meetings, the CEOs of the national companies expressed their satisfaction with the progress achieved and renewed their firm commitment to support this strategic project, launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the former Nigerian President, emphasizing the significant energy, economic and social benefits expected for the region.
