High insulin doses in type 1 diabetes a cancer risk factor
High insulin doses in people with Typ-1-Diabetes seem that risk of cancer to increase significantly. If necessary, the cancer screening tests and the recommendations for insulin dosage should be adjusted accordingly.
Studies on people with Typ-1-Diabetes show a connection between high insulin dosage and the occurrence of cancers. The corresponding study results were published in the specialist magazine “JAMA Oncology” released.
type 1 diabetes and cancer
“Type 1 diabetes accounts for an estimated five to 10 percent of all diabetes cases, and recent studies have also found a higher incidence of certain cancers such as stomach, liver, pancreas, endometrial and kidney cancer in type 1 diabetes (…). “reports the head of the study Dr. Yuanjie Mao from the Diabetes Institute at the Ohio University.
However, none of this study so far have identified the individual risk factors for cancer incidence in type 1 diabetes. This has now been done in the new research work.
Evaluation of the individual risk factors
In collaboration with the epidemiologist Wenjun Zhong of the Merck Research Labs in Pennsylvania (USA) hat Dr. Mao more than 50 risk factors such as smoking, alcohol use, and family medical history to determine their relevance to cancer in people with type 1 diabetes.
For this purpose, the data from 1,303 people with type 1 diabetes from the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) evaluated over a period of 28 years were collected.
To determine the influence of insulin dosage, the participants were three groups divided: low dosage with less than 0.5 units per kilogram, medium dosage with 0.5 to 0.8 units per kilogram and high dosage with 0.8 units per kilogram or more.
Cancer risk increases with high insulin doses
The data analysis has a significant increased risk of cancer in the high-dose insulin group compared to the low-dose group, the researchers report. The data also shows that people with a insulin resistance are particularly at risk.
In people with type 1 diabetes, the usual metabolic risk factors such as overweightthe Hemoglobinwert (A1c) and high blood pressure in the current study are not associated with an increased risk of cancer, so Dr. Mao.
“We know that people with type 1 diabetes are more likely to develop cancer than people without diabetes”stressed Dr. Liz Beverly, co-director of the Diabetes Institute at Ohio University. Current research identifies a possible mechanism to explain this association.
The new findings will prompt further research in this area and possibly changes in the cancer prevention and the recommendations for insulin dosing lead, summed up Dr. Beverly. (fp)
