High-demand train route canceled due to breakages

A highly demanded train route in western Cuba was canceled “temporarily” due to breakages of passenger cars, according to officials. What happened and when will it be resumed?

In the midst of the persistent public transportation crisis in Cuba, the Cuban Railway Union (UFC) canceled the route of the Los Arabos-Matanzas train, which transported more than 700 passengers weekly, as confirmed on networks by the Minister himself, Eduardo Rodríguez. .

This decision was made after the derailment of Extra Train 107 on September 27, at kilometer 149.2 of the Central Line, which affected three passenger cars, leaving no victims.

The Minister of Transportation, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, reported that the UFC does not have additional cars to replace the damaged ones, which forced the suspension of this service.

The train, which began operating in October 2023, ran three days a week, with a capacity for 240 seated passengers and made eight stops on a journey of approximately two hours between these towns.

Rodríguez highlighted the complexity of the maneuvers to restore the track and evacuate the damaged cars, which are at the Quintana station and will be transferred to the Unión de Reyes Workshop for repair.

The minister assured that the work will be carried out as quickly as possible to reduce the impact on the population, although the state of the railway infrastructure in Cuba remains critical.

The train situation in Cuba is even more complicated, since, according to official data from March, 67% of the railway tracks and 40% of the infrastructure in Cuba require maintenance.

Rodríguez assured that the affected cars will be repaired at the Unión de Reyes Workshop and promised that the work will be carried out in the shortest possible time to mitigate the impact on the population.
