Kochi | High Court allows abortion of 15-year-old girl who was conceived by her brother. The court ordered citing the medical board report that if the girl gives birth, there is a possibility of various social and health complications. Justice Ziyad Rahman considered the report of the medical board and ordered the action.
‘Since the child was born from his own brother, the child is likely to have social and medical complications. In such circumstances, the court held that it is necessary to grant permission for abortion as requested by the petitioner.
The court was considering the plea filed by the father of the minor girl seeking medical abortion. The medical board opined that continuing the pregnancy would cause serious injury to the social and mental health of the girl child and that the complications of teenage pregnancy would affect the physical health of the girl child. Therefore, the minor girl submitted a medical report showing that she was physically and mentally fit for Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP). Subsequently, the court directed the district medical officer and the superintendent of the government medical college hospital to take immediate steps to terminate the girl’s pregnancy without delay.
