High concentrations of certain PFAS for half of Brussels residents

The concentration of the four PFAS (PFAS4) considered to be the most dangerous for health exceeds the standard of 4 nanograms per liter of water for a large part of the water consumed in Brussels.

The famous standard of 4 nanograms per liter of water is that recommended by experts and a European scientific body, who suggest the establishment of such a ceiling. On Wednesday, the Brussels Minister of the Environment Alain Maron (Ecolo) had indicated that, for the 20 PFAS detected by Vivaqua since 2020, concentrations never exceed the ceiling of 100 nanograms per liter of water (the European standard from 2026, but which will already be in force in Brussels from the beginning of 2024, Editor’s note), nor the alert threshold of 30 nanograms per liter that the Brussels Region intends to establish.

The four most dangerous PFAS affected

Regional deputy Christophe De Beukelaer (Les Engagés) however unearthed information relating to the four most dangerous PFAS coming from Vivaqua. The “PFAS4 level detected in the Rhode reservoir greatly exceeds the Danish standard (2 ng/l) and the indicative threshold set in Flanders (4 ng/l)”, notes the elected official. Between October 2021 and October this year, the average concentration of PFAS4 reaches 6.9 ng/l in this reservoir, which serves more than half of the taps in Brusselswe read on Saturday in the regional edition of La Derniere Heure.

The Callois and Uccle reservoirs, which water the other half of the capital’s inhabitants, also display concentrations higher than Danish standards., but below recommendations. They remain much lower than those detected in the Rhode reservoir.
