High clouds, heat in the Arabian Sea; Climate change in Kerala | Climate Change Kerala | Arabian Sea

Kochi: The Kochi University Meteorological Department has reported a major change in the climate of Kerala. The report was prepared by a team of scientists led by Dr. S. Abhilash. The report said that huge clouds form during the monsoon season, which can lead to cloudbursts and flash floods.

From 2018 onwards, floods and landslides are expected to wreak havoc due to heavy rains in one or two hours. Scientists at the Advanced Sound Center for Atmospheric Radar Research at Cochin University have studied the phenomenon of precipitation in less than one day’s rainfall. The study compared the nature of rainfall from 1980 to 1999 with rainfall from 2000 to 2019.

Heavy rainfall in Kerala from 2018 was also studied. Small cloudbursts and flash floods are caused by clouds that rise for miles into the atmosphere. The study found that such clouds are formed because the Arabian Sea is unusually warm.

The study was published in the journal Nature Portfolio, an international scientific journal, by researchers at Cochin University. The study suggests that development plans and public facilities in Kerala should be designed keeping in mind the risk of mild eruptions and subsequent floods.
