High calcium- Hossam Mowafi reveals its causes and complications

Dr. Hossam Mowafi, a professor of critical cases at the Faculty of Medicine, Kasr Al-Ainy, warned of a high level of a mineral in the blood, stressing that an increase in its levels above the normal rate threatens an important vital organ with a serious disease.

Mowafi said during his program “My Lord, Increase Me in Knowledge”, broadcast on Sada Al-Balad channel, that the mineral he is referring to is calcium, explaining that the parathyroid gland is responsible for producing a hormone that regulates its level in the blood.

He stressed that high calcium in the blood means that the parathyroid gland produces its hormone in large quantities, which is a pathological condition known as “hyperactivity of the parathyroid gland.”

The professor of critical care medicine recommended speeding up the control of high calcium in the blood, because its continued increase may lead to pancreatitis.

He explained that high calcium in the blood increases the activity of pancreatic enzymes – responsible for fats, proteins and carbohydrates – inside its cells, which causes inflammation.

According to Clevelandclinic, anyone can suffer from high calcium, but it is more common in women after menopause.

The medical site added that the pancreas is not the only vital organ that is affected by high calcium, but there is a possibility that the patient will suffer from kidney failure and heart electrical imbalance as well.

He pointed to the ease of early detection of high calcium in the blood through the following symptoms:

– frequent urination.

Constant thirst.

– Tired.

– Bone pain.

Headache.

Nausea.

– vomiting.

– constipation.

Poor appetite.

Forgetfulness, confusion or depression.

Muscle pain or spasm.
