high blood sugar increases the risk of death

THE ESSENTIAL

  • In France, around 80,000 people have a myocardial infarction each year.
  • We speak of hyperglycaemia when the sugar in the blood is greater than or equal to 1.10 g/litre, on an empty stomach.

High cholesterol, hypertension, obesity, smoking, hyperglycemia… Several factors increase the risk of having a heart attack. In a study published in the journal Plos One, scientists from the University of São Paulo (Brazil) measured the impact of changes in modifiable risk factors on deaths from cardiovascular disease. For the purposes of the work, they analyzed data from the Brazilian population collected between 2005 and 2017, determining the number of deaths attributed to each risk factor.

Heart attack: more than 6,000 deaths due to hyperglycemia

“Deaths due to cardiovascular diseases decreased by 21.42%, accompanied by a drop in smoking (-33%) and an increase in hyperglycemia (+9.5%), obesity (+ 31%) and dyslipidemia (+5.2%), i.e. a high level of lipids”can we read in the results.

According to the authors, reducing smoking averted nearly 20,000 deaths from heart disease during this period, while rising cases of high blood sugar resulted in more than 6,000 deaths from cardiovascular disease. . In the study, the team reported that the association between high blood sugar and mortality from heart disease was 5 to 10 times higher than that seen for other risk factors, particularly in women.

“A reduction in the prevalence of hyperglycaemia”

“To help fight cardiovascular disease, recommendations should focus on reducing the prevalence of hyperglycemia, through nutrition education, restrictions on foods and beverages containing added sugars or sugars. ‘better access to new classes of drugs that reduce the risk of fatal heart attack faced by diabetics’, said Renato Gaspar, author of the work, in a statement.
