Manila: The Civil Aviation Authority has declared high alert at all airports due to the threat of explosions on flights departing from Manila, the capital of the Philippines.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said immediate measures have been taken to enhance security at 42 airports in the country. The authority added that threats received from unknown sources are being investigated.

After receiving the threat via e-mail, airport security managers have been directed to tighten security, check baggage thoroughly and conduct round-the-clock surveillance.

Air traffic services received an e-mail warning that flights from the capital Manila to Davao, Bicol and the popular tourist destinations of Palawan and Cebu are threatened. CAP did not say when it received the warning.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said patrols have been increased in all terminals at the Manila International Airport, K9 units have been deployed and law enforcement agencies are coordinating operations. In a statement, Bautista said protocols are in place to ensure everyone’s safety and passengers need not fear.
