The study found that some products, such as kitchen utensils and black plastic food containers, contained high levels of chemicals commonly used in plastics and electronics (BFRs).
85% of the products examined (203 products) were found to contain toxic levels of BFRs, including a banned substance known as deca-BDE, which is considered a carcinogen.
Some scientists have suggested that exposure to BFRs may increase the risk of diseases, such as cancer, endocrine disruption, and neurotoxicity.
The study also warned that black plastic used in other products, such as children’s toys and food containers, may carry the same risks. She called for reducing the use of black plastic in food utensils to avoid exposure to these toxic materials.
Another study indicated that plastic and non-stick pans may release microplastic particles into food during cooking, raising concerns about the health effects of these particles.
The researchers stressed the need to increase awareness about the dangers of using plastic utensils, especially old ones, and called on consumers to use non-plastic utensils.
At the conclusion of the study, the researchers urged more research on the health effects of consuming microplastics, and stressed the importance of reducing the use of plastic in kitchen utensils to improve public health.
The study was published in the journal Chemosphere.
