Since 2017, Tenango Day has been celebrated in Hidalgo, in recognition of the work, effort, talent and imagination of the artisans who dedicate themselves to this work.
This embroidery emerged in the community of San Nicolás, Tenango de Doria, in the 1960s, as an innovation by the artisan Josefina José Tavera, who sought to make her embroidery more striking, making her creation very successful and popular. quickly.
The communities of El Aguacate and San Pablo el Grande are also precursors of this embroidery, according to studies presented by the Autonomous University of the State of Hidalgo (UAEH).
According to data from the General Directorate of Artisanal Promotion, belonging to the Ministry of Welfare and Social Inclusion, in Tenango de Doria there are 2,397 artisans dedicated to these embroideries, 144 in San Bartolo Tutotepec and 90 in Huehuetla.
Due to their beauty and easy commercialization, they have become popular and it is possible to find this type of embroidery throughout the entire Hidalgo territory. However, with the passage of time they have become a distinctive brand among the rest of the country, which It has even led them to obtain international recognition.
In the capital of Hidalgo, these embroideries can be found in the Hidarte Store in Pachuca, although it is also possible to purchase a piece in one of the eight regional stores of the same brand; one of them located in the municipality of Tenango de Doria, with designs made by artisans from the Otomí-Tepehua region, and whose income is returned in full to the pockets of its creators.
Since their origin, tenangos contain images of fantastic beings, animals with impossible physiognomies in everyday and imaginary scenarios, but equally beautifully decorated with flowers of different colors.
Traced on fabric, preferably on a blanket, the tenangos are first drawn by hand; That is why this step is considered a fundamental part of the manufacturing process, since from the beginning an aesthetic sense is provided to each piece.
Subsequently, its creator chooses brightly colored cotton threads that must be meticulously assembled, and that will give it a distinctive seal compared to embroidery from other regions.
