Hezbollah is talking regarding retaliation following Israel attacked southern Lebanon killing ten civilians, half of whom were children, warned today (15.02.2024) the organization’s senior official and MP Hassan Fadlallah.

“The enemy (the Israel) will pay the price for these crimes,” Fadlallah told Reuters when asked regarding the reaction of the powerful and Iran armed group in the face of the bloodiest day for civilians in Lebanon since fighting began along its southern border.

Yesterday, several members of the Lebanese organization were also killed in separate strikes, including Nabatieh, according to the organization and security sources.

Among the dead were many children at whose funerals there were many people demanding revenge.

Asked regarding the strike in Nabatieh, an Israeli military spokesman said today that the military was waiting for more information “regarding this event, but we will update when we have more information.”

A source familiar with Hezbollah’s reasoning said the attack on Nabatieh signals an Israeli escalation but still remains within the unwritten “rules of engagement.”

Israel announced yesterday that it responded to a cross-border rocket fire from Lebanon that killed one of its soldiers and injured eight others in the town of Safed, located regarding 15 kilometers from the Lebanese border.

Hezbollah did not claim responsibility for this attack. As Fadlallah said, Hezbollah has a “legitimate right to defend its citizens and will not hesitate to do what it takes to protect them,” while insisting that Israel must stop the war in Gaza.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati also asked Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib to lodge a new protest with the United Nations Security Council over yesterday’s strikes.

According to newsit, the Israeli military announced today that Israeli warplanes hit dozens of Hezbollah targets in the Wadi Saluki region of southern Lebanon and the organization’s infrastructure in the Labuneh region, while overnight a military structure of the organization in Taibeh.

The conflict between Hezbollah – which backs its Palestinian ally Hamas – and Israel runs parallel to the war in Gaza, raising concerns regarding the risk of a general conflict between the heavily armed foes.

Both sides have said they do not want that, and the conflict has been largely confined to areas near the border.
