Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has praised pro-Palestinian protests in Western countries. These put pressure on their governments, said Nasrallah in a speech on Saturday in Beirut. The leaders of Western countries, who initially opposed a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, now called for a “complete ceasefire.” Apart from the US government, no one supports Israeli “aggression” anymore, said the head of the Lebanese Shiite militia.
In view of the suffering of the civilian population during the Israeli military operation once morest the Islamist Palestinian organization Hamas, French President Emmanuel Macron had previously called for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. There is no justification for the killing of civilians, babies, women and the elderly, Macron argued.
The war was triggered by the worst massacre in Israel’s history, carried out by terrorists from the Islamist Hamas and other extremist Palestinian organizations on October 7th in Israel near the border with the Gaza Strip.
Hezbollah is considered Iran’s most important non-state ally and is part of the self-proclaimed “Axis of Resistance,” a front of militias aimed at fighting Iran’s arch-enemy Israel. Since the beginning of the Gaza war, there have been repeated confrontations between the Israeli army and the Shiite militia on the border between Israel and Lebanon. There were already deaths on both sides.
Nasrallah was more critical of the Arab and Islamic states. “Can’t 57 Arab and Muslim countries open the Rafah crossing?” he said, referring to the border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. The Palestinians hoped for more aid deliveries and the transport of the wounded. He also called on countries gathered at a summit in Riyadh to put pressure on the US. “The one who manages, decides and leads this fight is the American government,” Nasrallah said. The Palestinians did not ask for international armies to be deployed. “They just want the Arab and Islamic world to stand united, to scream in the faces of Americans and demand an end to this aggression.”
