The Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah confirmed the death of its commander Ibrahim Aqil, who died this Friday in an Israeli bombing on the outskirts of Beirut along with 13 other people and who Israel says was the head of Military Operations of the armed movement.
“Today, the great leader Hajj Ibrahim Aqil, alias Hajj Abdul Qader, has joined the ranks of his martyred brothers, the great leaders, after a blessed life full of holy struggle, work, injuries, sacrifices, challenges and victories,” the Shiite party announced in a statement.
Hezbollah has not yet provided details about his exact position in the group, although the Israeli military said he was its head of military operations and claimed that several members of the elite Radwan Forces were killed alongside him.
According to an Israeli military statement, all of them “were planning the ‘Conquest of Galilee’ attack, with which Hezbollah intended to infiltrate Israeli communities and kill innocent civilians.”
The bombing of a residential building in the southern suburbs of Beirut, known as El Dahye, left at least 14 dead and 66 wounded, according to the latest toll from the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health.
The killing of Aqil comes less than two months after another attack attributed to Israel killed Hezbollah’s then top military commander, Fuad Shukr, also in a building in Dahye.
This time, the new attack comes after two waves of simultaneous explosions this week on thousands of communication devices carried by Hezbollah members killed 37 people and injured almost 3,000 in Lebanon.
