The start of the show is unfortunately delayed, but that’s what the booking department says Head In Clouds finely assembled triumvirate Co, Thosar and Hexis in the situationally elastic, solidly filled Sub but precisely.
Co For almost half an hour, they underline the immensely positive impression that their 2022 EP From all clouds started: heavy, oppressive and with perfectly accentuated, downright frantic outbursts created that evening (for work-related reasons, nevertheless “RIP“) The quintet, made up of just four, has a lot of pressure under the hood, presses through a dynamic range with a lot of presence and settles into a draining catharsis – aggressive, crushing, and yes, just really damn poisonous.
What would have definitely deserved a pit because of the excess, but on this evening received a benevolent distance from a large part of the audience, which was certainly enthusiastic but only reacted with limited euphoria. But it’s only the fourth show of the band axis from Vienna and Linz, and soon no one will be able to escape the hungry hardcore beast that a bunch of scene veterans are letting off the leash.
Wo Co 22 neatly shown in our annual charts, the ones that have so far been criminally overlooked at this point would probably also have shown this Thosar deserved. A quick listen also led to the assumption that what the Weizer drum & bass duo is doing live is a level above their strong studio outpourings: the floor literally vibrates under the trembling power of the rhythm section, which has a fat rock groove and snarling grind-massacre tendencies, complete with psychedelic nuances and thrash attitude, it’s like an infernal mixture bitten by a tarantula Lightning Bolt, Oozing Wound, Tweak Bird and High on Fire sounds like if the sludge was blown at speed.
It is not surprising that the number of visitors feels at its highest at this point in the evening, until people interact with the instruments and threaten to announce if there are no encores (spoiler: there are basically no encores from anyone this evening!): Thosar are just fucking awesome!
After this first class preliminary program we have it Hexis difficult, but consequently do practically everything right – even if Co and Thosar proving to be the spotlight stealer of the evening.
This will be fitting Sub for the Danes’ performance, they are immersed in complete darkness, while a massive strobe light storm, combined with the intense volume, makes you dizzy and acts like kerosene for blackened hardcore (but also raises the question of whether the band would be able to perform live without this audio-visual-atmospheric density apart from their flawless genre competence might really impress).
Between Celeste and Trap Them In any case, the incendiary scenes hit with manic force – frontman Filip reads the news with an outstretched index finger, clenched fist and kicking gesture in his own merch (which unfortunately only omits the current split, but otherwise offers practically everything with the band logo), and Berseler bassist Luca bares the teeth, neo-drummer Kristian is more prominently represented in the structure than touring guitarist Josh – but the viscous moments of noise-affinous post metal slaughter are actually even better, more draining and more differentiated.
Only the apocalypse ambient breaks coming from the tape seem a little unevenly pressed into the incessantly sweating structure. Throw around these Hexis yet rich in their nihilism, convincing all around. But not anymore.
Which is also due to the fact that there are probably not two dozen people left in the sub when the band says goodbye shortly before half past eleven and with a compact set list without much fanfare to travel to the next stop on their almost absurdly detailed tour, but at the same time might not unleash a spark that would spread to the audience. But that’s complaining at a high level.
