Hexagon invests another $100 million in American Divergent Technologies. The scale-up has raised a total of $230 million from investors in a new round. Aston Martin and Mercedes AMG, among others, are customers of the Americans, who also focus on the aviation and defense industry.

“We are now in the ‘4D era’ of fully digitalized design-manufacture-assembly as-a-service,” said Kevin Czinger, Divergent Founder, Lead Inventor and CEO. With the Divergent Adaptive Production System (DAP), Divergent has built an end-to-end hardware and software system that uses internally developed AI-driven generative design software to construct structures computationally, new materials and additive manufacturing to produce structures. Assemblies of larger structures do not require clamping tools.

Without CAPEX

According to the company’s founder and CEO, customers can develop new products without having to invest in design-specific matters first. You are also never stuck with past decisions when developing a new model, because the chassis are designed and produced completely digitally.

Print technology from SLM Solutions

The chassis that Divergent produces, including with SLM Solutions metal printers with 12 lasers, are cheaper in production costs, easier to customize and are available more quickly for go to market of a new model. Production can also be scaled up to volume production. The American company has a total of seven blue chip customers from the automotive industry, but is also active in the aerospace and defense industries.

Growth potential

Hexagon previously invested in Divergent Technologies and is now once again leading a group of institutional and private investors. Hexagon president Paolo Guglielmini said at AWK 23 earlier this year in Aachen that Divergent’s new way of designing and manufacturing could lead to a 20% reduction in the number of parts in a chassis. According to him, the Americans are working on a future autonomous system in which the generative design software ultimately becomes an operating system.
