Here’s why your soda bottle cap stays attached

Unsurprisingly, the ecological reason is put forward by the manufacturer: “With the move to attached caps, we’re making a small change that we hope will have a big impact, so no caps get lost when consumers sort our bottles.“, explains An Vermeulen, Country Director of the Coca-Cola bottler.

The primary objective is therefore to facilitate recycling, because the bottle and its cap are sorted in a single step. Belgium is also one of the champions in waste sorting and recycling, with a rate of 95%. By comparison, the global average is less than 50%.

Sylvie Gobert, professor of biological oceanography at the University of Liège, welcomes the gesture: “It’s a very good idea since it’s often the cork that gets lost while the bottle is recycled.“. However, the expert also regrets the lateness: “It’s a bit slow compared to cans. The opening has remained attached to the can for several decades now, whereas initially it also separated from its container.“.

Coca-Cola is not the first brand to bet on caps attached to bottles. Since 2016, the Cristalline spring water brand has been gradually equipping its bottles with a new solidarity cap called “snap clic“.
