For years, the number of goals scored in the NHL has been steadily increasing. Teams are now averaging more than 3 goals per game, something that hasn’t happened since the early 1990s. The lowest point was reached in 2003-2004, when the average was 2.57 goals per game.
The question is, “Why do teams score more?”
Here are some theories that have been raised by several experts.
1. Modification and application of the rules
In the 1990s and early 2000s, gaming was relatively slow and sluggish. Defensive hockey was the norm, but beginning in the 2005–06 season, obstruction-related penalties such as holding, snagging, cross-checking, etc. were penalized more severely and other changes were made to the rules to open up the game to more skill.
2. More talented players
With less talented players unable to make up for their deficit through holds, snagging, etc., teams suddenly found themselves with three (or sometimes four) lines capable of contributing to the offense. Today, in the NHL, there are many 20-goal scorers, even on the third line of a team.
3. More goals in overtime
NHL games end in overtime regarding a quarter of the time. Since the move to 3-on-3 overtime, regarding half of those games end in overtime instead of going to a shootout.
4. Better technology
Players have better access to advanced technology, including hockey sticks. Gone are the days of a few players clinging to their wooden hockey stick. Today, all NHL players have a dangerous shot.
5. More involved defenders
Defenders are much more active in creating the attack and they score more. Today, the best defenders regularly score more than one point per game.
