Put down the phone! Otherwise, you might miss Alexander Skarsgård’s hilarious foray into the first episode of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”
Mild spoiler warning, if you haven’t seen the first episode of Prime Video’s new Mr. & Mrs. Smith TV series yet.
I’ve already praised the first season of Donald Glover’s new TV series “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” as one of this year’s must-see shows. The series is (very) loosely inspired by the feature film of the same name from 2005, which then had Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in the title roles. This time, however, it is Glover and Maya Erskine who will play our secret agents John and Jane Smith for a total of eight episodes.
But during the short introduction, in just over four minutes, we have time to follow what happened to the two former “Mr. & Mrs. Smiths”. Namely, the new series explains that all the paired agents in this organization have the same alias. And before Glover and Erskine’s characters are recruited into the organization, we learn that it was Alexander Skarsgard and Eiza Gonzalez (“Baby Driver”) who had gone on risky missions together calling themselves John and Jane Smith.
Given that the jump-in seems to have only been there to show the dangers Glover and Erskine will face in the first season. So I have to say that both Skarsgård and Gonzales manage to do a lot with their short screen time together. Enough so that I’d be more than happy to see Prime Video order a prequel series, which might give us a full season of just their two versions of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” as well.
The entire first season of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is now available on Prime Video.
