Last May, Sony announced that it was working on a certain Project Q, a portable console on which you can stream your PS5 games anywhere as long as you have Wi-Fi. Since the end of August, this project finally has a name : PlayStation Portal, and despite some communication hiccups, this console is already a huge international success. With us, it is already available for pre-order from several merchants, here are them.

It’s been many years since the portable console market has been this prolific. If these machines were increasingly neglected in favor of mobile games, they are now experiencing renewed interest since the success of the Steam Deck and progress in terms of cloud gaming. Proof of this is with Sony which is now launching into this market with the PlayStation Portal, a portable console best seen as a peripheral for streaming its PS5 games, which is already available for pre-order more than a month before its release.

Where to pre-order PlayStation Portal?

PlayStation Portal will officially launch from November 15, a few weeks before the holiday season, so you might as well get a head start by pre-ordering it before it becomes a victim of its success. Indeed, Sony’s new “portable console” is already out of stock in Japan and the United States. Today, it is already possible to pre-order it from several merchants for 219.99 euros.

PlayStation Portal: what to expect from Sony’s new “portable console”?

The information on the PlayStation Portal being delivered in dribs and drabs, here is what we know at the time of writing these lines.

To summarize the design, the PlayStation Portal is a DualSense controller shared in the middle by an 8-inch LCD panel, a bit like a Nintendo Switch with its Joy-Con. This panel is 1080p with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. There is also a 3.5 mm jack port as well as a PlayStation-Link connection to wirelessly connect accessories designed by Sony. In terms of connectivity, there is no Bluetooth, but you can play it with a Wi-Fi Internet connection. This must have a speed of at least 5 Mb/s according to the Japanese giant and a connection of at least 15 Mb/s is even recommended.

Thus, the PlayStation Portal is essentially dedicated to remote play and allows you to play your PS5 on another screen. In this way, it is very similar to the Backbone One, this controller which allows you to stream your favorite games on your smartphone. But to take advantage of it, you obviously have to own a PS5. And watch out for some games that are not compatible with wireless streaming technology and therefore cannot be supported by PlayStation Portal! The same goes for games launched in cloud gaming via the PlayStation Premium Plus subscription.

A final word on autonomy. While the first rumors assured that the autonomy of the PlayStation Portal would be between 3 and 4 hours, Sony would in reality aim for an autonomy similar to that of the DualSense controller. Clearly, it would have an endurance of around ten hours depending on the settings. The PlayStation Portal might therefore be more promising than we initially thought.
