YouTubeowned by Google of the group Alphabet Inc. Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL), has launched a new AI assistant designed to help users recover hacked accounts.
What happened
The AI chatbot, described as a “troubleshooting tool,” is accessible through YouTube’s Help Center. It guides creators whose profiles have been hacked through a series of questions to help them secure their Google logins and undo unauthorized changes to their channels.
Currently, the support assistant is only available in English and is limited to a select group of creators. However, Google plans to expand access to all YouTube creators.
The chatbot appears to be a standard support tool without any generative AI capabilities. However, it doesn’t address creators’ main complaint about the difficulty of contacting YouTube directly when they have issues.
The addition of an AI chatbot may disappoint creators who were hoping for better communication from YouTube, especially since account hacking has also affected big creators like Linus Tech Tips.
Smaller accounts often face extended resolution times due to limited direct support, and some are often forced to contact the streaming giant on the social media platform X.
Why is it important?
The introduction of YouTube’s AI chatbot comes on the heels of several high-profile hacking incidents.
In April 2022, some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Drake, Eminem e Justin Bieberthey have view their YouTube accounts compromised by an unauthorized source who uploaded bizarre clips. The hacker’s actions affected artists, causing them to lose millions of subscribers, highlighting the vulnerability of the platform.
Additionally, in September 2022, the official YouTube channel of the South Korean government was hacked and renamed “SpaceX Invest”. The channel then broadcast a video with Elon Musk who was talking about cryptocurrencies.
YouTube’s new AI chatbot aims to solve these problems by providing creators with a streamlined process to regain control of their accounts. However, how effective this tool will be at resolving issues in a timely manner remains to be seen.
